Like most other cities in Virginia, the city of Bristol is also an independent city of Virginia, which also acquires the status of a twin-city because of its geographic location.

The Bristol City is surrounded by the Washington county of Virginia and the Sullivan county of Tennessee and being a major metropolitan area is home to around 17, 367 people.The twin city of Tennessee joins its Virginia counterpart at the State street, which is also the main street of the city of Bristol. The total land area of Bristol is 33.4 square kilometers while 0.7 square kilometer of the total area is covered by water. The common factor binding the twin-cities of Bristol politically is the administrative set-up. While both fall into separate jurisdictions, they are both governed by a council-manager form of government. Both the cities have similar set-ups of Planning Commission, industrial development authorities and zone-wise ordinances. The part of bristol lying within the state of Virginia is lesser than the part lying within Tennessee. While, Bristol in Virginia has a total area of 13.3 square miles, the total area of Bristol in Tennessee measures 24.7 square miles. Although, the city of Bristol in Virginia is one of the least developed cities in terms of income, education and health care, it is one city where broadband technology is extremely developed, in fact, one of the best in the US. One factor, which has contributed to making Bristol a very popular city of the US, is its country music which owes its origins to this place of Virginia.
