The present day city of Salem has originated from the town of Salem that was formed in 1802 as part of the county of Botetourt. The town of Salem was formally designated the status of a town in the year of 1806 by the help of a special charter and finally after 162 years in the year 1968, the town of Salem finally was transformed into the city of Salem. Since, Salem is an independent city within the Commonwealth of Virginia therefore; the city has its own administrative system which provides the city with all basic amenities like water, electricity and sewerage.The city of Salem lies on the Shenandoah Valley that is situated amidst the Alleghany Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountain. Enjoying a position in nature’s lap, along the Roanoke River, Salem is one of the most beautiful cities within Virginia. According to census records of the year 2006, the population of Salem in Virginia is 24,825. Today, Salem is also popular in Virginia as well as throughout USA, for a considerable contribution to basketball.
Historical evidences show that civilization existed in Salem as early as 8000 B.C. And it was home to the native Americans from that pre-Christian period until the 18th century. The first European settlement took place in Salem after almost 6 decades from the period that the Europeans settled in Jamestown. The town of Salem was developed in the year 1752 from the remainders of Fort Lewis and the area was transformed into a defense colony. However, the region around Salem truly gained the status of a town, only after the American Revolution was over. The town was founded during the same time as neighboring Covington, in the year 1802 and became an official town, in 1806. Salem has had a great contribution in American educational system in the form of the Roanoke College. The college originally started as a boy’s college in 1842 and continues to grow and develop to this day. Salem has been successful in maintaining its old-world charm and the numerous historic sites of the place further adds to its tourism potential.
