The independent city of Franklin in Virginia lies to the southeastern region of the Commonwealth of Virginia beside the Blackwater River. This seaside location of the Franklin city has made it extremely suitable to all professions related to the sea, especially navigation, trade and transportation.
The water transportation system had helped Franklin to contribute to America’s infrastructure while the establishment of the railways has transformed it into an important link between Norfolk and Roanoke Basin. Originally, Franklin was incorporated as a town within the US in the March of 1876 but it was not until the December of 1961 that Franklin town was changed to Franklin city. According to the census of 2000, franklin city has a total area of 8.75 square miles while its population is recorded at 8400.

The administrative form within the city of Franklin is on the Mayor-Council lines wherein the council consists of 6 members, all of whom are act under the supervision of the mayor. However, bulk of the administrative functions of the city lies with the City Manager, who is subsequently elected by the council. The municipality of Franklin city provides the city with its own electrical and water supplies.

Although, agriculture is the chief industry of Franklin city, the economy of the place is also highly dependent on other such industries as retail, service trades and wholesale sectors. A huge portion of the economy of Franklin city is also dependent on the large forest sector of the city. However, the city is popular worldwide for its lumber company called, International Paper.
