Eastern and southern Ukraine were captured by the Mongol king and grandson of Genghis Khan, Batu, in 1240. Poles and Lithuanians took over the reins of northern and western Ukrainian regions in the fourteenth century. The steppes of Ukraine were populated by some serfs in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries after running away from their Polish landlords. They came to be known as Cossacks or Kozaky, which meant freemen. They created self-governing communities and went on to unite and create the Cossack Hetmanate under the leadership of a general or hetman.
