Amtrak Service in Florida
Amtrak provides railway service on passenger trains all around the United States. The Amtrak System reaches Florida via Georgia and Alabama, and runs down the peninsula to Miami. Amtrak stations in Florida include Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, and Orlando.
Florida High-Speed Rail
Department of Transport of Florida planned to build a high-speed rail between Tampa, Orlando and Miami. The high-speed rail would travel at up to 186 miles per hour, allowing passengers to travel across Florida considerably faster than driving and other modes of transportation.
The Florida high-speed rail project was initiated by a vote in 2000, in which voters approved the state constitutional amendment for the trains. The project was scheduled to begin in 2011, with the first phase finished by 2014. In 2010, the high-speed rail project in Florida was canceled by Florida Governor Rick Scott, and the federal funds that had been allocated to the project were redirected to other states.
