Chitre is a city and capital of the province of Herrera. Chitre is located on the Azuero Peninsula.The name Chitré comes from the native tribe Chitra.


Chitre in Panama with an estimated population of 185,465 people, is one of the most popular cities in Panama. Chitre Panama was founded on the 19th of October in the year 1848 and is situated in the province of Herrera. Covering an area of about 2340 square kilometers, Chitre of Panama is the commercial hub for the central provinces of the country.

Panama City is about 93 miles and San Miguel is about 120 miles from Chitre. The other nearby cities are Santiago, Balboa, and Vacamonte. The inhabitants of Chitre use Balboa as well as US dollars as their currency. The national languages are Spanish and English. However, Spanish is used as the official language. Residents of Chitre are known as Panamanians.

The nearby towns to Chitre are Parita, Ocu, Los Pozos, Las Minas, and Santa Maria. The culture and beauty of Chitre are what attract tourists from far and wide. Chitre hosts many luxurious hotels and restaurants, which are also great attractions for travelers.

Sirugia National Park is one of the greatest places for sightseeing at Chitre. Apart from this, the Herrera Museum is another attraction. The comfortable transport system makes traveling easy for the tourists, who love to explore and adventure in Chitre.
