About Georgia
Georgia is the 4th state of the United States, which was admitted to the union on January 2, 1788. Atlanta is Georgia’s capital city. It is also the largest city and the largest metro-urban area in Georgia state.
English and Spanish are the major spoken languages. Georgia is currently the 29th populous state in the US. While “Peach State” and “Empire State of the South” are its nicknames, “Wisdom, Justice, Moderation” is the State Motto. Learn more about this US state from Facts of Georgia.
Georgia Flag
Georgia’s state flag has three horizontal stripes: Red, White, and Red (from the top). The flag also features a blue canton. It features a gold-colored coat of arms of Georgia, surrounded by a ring of 13 five-pointed white stars. These stars represent the original Thirteen Colonies. In April 1775, these 13 Colonies started fighting the American Revolutionary War. Ultimately, they declared complete independence on July 4, 1776, and formed the United States of America.
Georgia’s coat of arms consists of:
- An arch that symbolizes the constitution of the state.
- Three pillars symbolize the government’s three branches.
- “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation”, the state motto, is wrapped around the pillars.
- A male figure wearing an American Revolutionary War dress is seen guarding the pillars.
- A drawn sword is there in the arms of the male soldier. It symbolizes that the male figure is there to defend the state’s constitution.
- “In God, We Trust”, an additional state motto, is engraved below the coat of arms elements.
The width-to-length ratio of the Georgia flag is 3 to 5. The current design of the flag was adopted on February 19, 2003.
Georgia State Symbols
The Georgia emblem, or the Great Seal of the State of Georgia, is almost identical to Georgia’s coat of arms in the flag. In addition to the flag’s coat of arms defined above, a border surrounds it. Outside the arms, “State of Georgia, 1776” is inscribed.
The seal’s back side has a different design. It features:
- On the coast of Georgia state, where you can see an American flag-bearing ship arriving to take cotton and tobacco abroad. It symbolizes the export trade of the state.
- A smaller boat can also be seen in the image. It represents the internal traffic of the state.
- A man can be seen plowing in the left part of the image. It also shows a flock of sheep.
- The “Agriculture and Commerce, 1776” motto is inscribed outside the image.
Though the seal’s original design was approved in 1777, the current version was adopted in 1914.
Georgia History
The early history of Georgia can be traced back 10,000 to 12,000 years ago. Small, seasonally occupied camps of the Paleo-Indian period’s migratory hunters can be found here. The Woodland culture emerged in the 1000 BCE to 900 CE period, followed by the Mississippian culture in and around 700 CE.
The first European expedition to this land area was done by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in around 1540. However, the advent of Europeans led to the decimation of the Mississippian culture, the indigenous population, and its highly organized agriculturalists. In 1732, George II granted the charter to establish the colony of Georgia. This led to the large-scale migration of English people to North America in the 17th Century.
In 1733, Savannah became Georgia’s first English Settlement. On the direction of James Edward Oglethorpe, a philanthropist and a soldier, a tightly structured settlement system was designed in Savannah. While slavery was abolished, small farm tracts and outlying garden cultivation wwereas encouraged for yeoman farmers in both towns and villages. In 1752, the trustees surrendered all power in the colony to the British government after facing emigration and unrest. After this, plantation agriculture took center stage. Plantation agriculture was heavily dependent on slavery, and it went on to become the economy of the colony. On January 2, 1788, Georgia became a state of the USA.
The American Revolution was a chaotic time for most Georgians. The response of Georgia to revolutionary tensions was complex. Many civil wars took place between patriots and loyalists. Once the revolution was complete, the settlement started to expand westwards. The expansion began in Augusta and continued to central Georgia (especially the “cotton counties”.)
Though the British started westward expansion, it was soon taken over by the American settlers. In the mid-18th century, the indigenous lands of Muskogee and Cherokee were encroached by the settlers. In the 1790s, large-scale commercial agriculture (mainly cotton cultivation) started after the native Americans were forced to leave their lands. The systematic removal of Muskogee and Cherokee people continued for decades, finally leading to the forced infamous Trail of Tears migration of 1838–39.
Slavery became an indispensable part of the Georgian economy in the mid-19th century. The American Civil War started in 1861. At that time, most of the white southerners joined the war in favor of the Confederacy and built the Confederate States of America to defend the rights of the slave owners and continue slavery. The Union army under Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman started their Georgian conquest in 1864 from the north and captured the southeast by December.
Slavery was abolished after the Civil War, which led to the rise of sharecropping. While the whites remained owners, blacks predominantly were the laborers. The pattern continued in the late 1910s and early 1920s. Reconstruction of Georgia was violent as the Ku Klux Klan killed hundreds of African Americans. Thomas E. Watson led a political alliance of farmers in the 1890s to defeat the conservatives and white supremacists.
The industrial economy was promoted in the late 19th century. Textile and iron manufacturing expanded in the 1880s and 1890s. Depending on railroad transportation, Atlanta quickly became a commercial center of the state.
During World War 1, many black people of Georgia left the state and migrated to the north. Thousands of sharecroppers were forced out of farming during the Great Depression of the 1930s. The economic reforms proposed by US President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal policies undermined the traditional farmers’ dominance. A government-regulated economy (against the laissez-faire economy) to balance conflicting economic interests was promoted to increase employment and revive the economy.
Military bases in Georgia increased during World War 2, revitalizing the state’s economy. The segregation of African Americans started getting challenged after WW2. Martin Luther King, Jr. led the civil rights movement. However, in 1868, he was assassinated. His grave has become a national historic site now. In 1972, African American Andrew Young was elected to the US Congress. In 1973, Maynard Jackson got elected as mayor of Atlanta. Jimmy Carter became the first Georgian to be elected president of the USA.
