Universities in South Dakota
There are six public universities managed by the South Dakota Board of Regents. The state is home to many private universities and has only one law and medical school.

South Dakota State University
South Dakota State University is located in Brookings, South Dakota. Established in 1881, it is the largest state university. It was founded as Dakota Agriculture College. It is a public land-grant university and sun grant college. It has an endowment of $49.1 million and is governed by the South Dakota Board of Regents. The Fall 2010 enrollment of students in the university was 12,816. It offers associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees. The university covers an area of 260-acres and is home to two museums, the South Dakota State Art Museum and the South Dakota Agricultural Heritage Museum.
Augustana College
Augustana College is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It is the largest private college in the state and was founded in 1860 as The Lutheran Normal School. It is liberal arts college affiliated with Evangelical Lutheran Church. It covers an area of 100 acres and has an endowment of USD $43 million. It has been awarded the “Best Midwestern College” title by The Princeton Review.
University of South Dakota
University of South Dakota or USD is located in Vermillion, South Dakota. It is the oldest public university and the second largest university of the state. Founded in 1862, it has an endowment of $122 million. Its first classes began in 1882. Since 1913, the university has been accredited by the North Central Association of College and School. It enrolls approximately 10,000 students and has 216-acre campus. The campus is home to the Old Main which was built in 1883, burned down in 1889, and finally restored in 1997. The university has seven colleges and offers 132 undergraduate and 62 graduate programs.
Sinte Gleska University
Sinte Gleska University is located in Mission, South Dakota. It is a four-year private American Indian tribal college and was established in 1970. It is a member of the American Indian Higher Education Consortium and offers 25 associate degrees, 23 bachelor’s degrees, two master’s degrees, 12 certificate programs, and many vocational programs. It enrolls approximately 1,000 students.
