New Hampshire History
Traces of the earliest inhabitants in the New Hampshire area date back to 12,000 years ago. On a seasonal basis, the prehistoric Native American Indians migrated to this place for food. In the 1500s, the first European explorers, mainly from France and England, started interested in this place. On a seasonal basis, the English people started fishing on the coast of New England.
In 1623, the first permanent European settlement started in New Hampshire. By 1640, European settlers settled in four towns: Hampton, Exeter, Portsmouth, and Dover. An armed resistance started in 1774 in New Castle, starting the American Revolution in the region. On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire attained statehood and became the ninth state admitted to the Union.
