Arizona Counties

by Vishul Malik

Following the organization of the Arizona Territory in 1862, the first 4 counties were created in 1864. Over half of Arizona Counties are named after multifarious Native American groups of Arizona. While 4 counties are named after physical features of Arizona’s landscape, the others are named after former settlements, early pioneers of the state, and native leaders.
