Dar es Salam was the capital city of Tanzania before Dodoma became the capital in 1996. Dar es Salam is also the cultural, political and commercial hub of Tanzania. It is not only the largest, but also the richest city of Tanzania. Though the national capital of Tanzania has shifted to Dodoma, many government offices of the country remain in Dar es Salam.

The location of Dar es Salam is very convenient with international flights from almost all over the world. Due to the location of the city on a natural harbour and its close proximity to the Indian Ocean, the weather is tropical.

Business activities are on rapid increase in Dar es Salam. Government offices and administrative functions are all controlled from Dar es Salam. Trading and manufacturing industries have also developed a lot in the Tanzanian city. Since the city is located near to a natural harbour, transportation is a flourishing business in Dar es Salam. The Julius Nyerere International Airport connects all the important international destinations.

Not only trade and business, Dar es Salam also has a rich cultural heritage. There are various song and dance forms that are practiced in the city. There are many museums, architectural ruins and historical places in Dar es Salam, which act as places of tourist attractions.

Education facilities are very good in Dar es Salam with schools, colleges and many internationally reputed universities. There are separate medical and technological universities in Dar es Salam too.
