Mozambique History
Mozambique History began with the migration of the Bantu speakers to the place in the first Millennium followed by the Arab and Swahili traders. Vasco Da Gama landed on the coast of Mozambique in the year 1498 and by the year 1505 Mozambique was a Portuguese Colony. It was only after 470 years that the people of Mozambique succeeded in acquiring independence from the Portuguese in the year 1975. Samora Moises Machel became the first President of Independent Mozambique. However, just within a decade of earning independence the National Government of Mozambique faced opposition from anti government guerrillas, the Mozambique National Resistance. This led to the alteration of the Constitution which drafted the creation of a Government with three branches. Thus ended the 16 years long Civil war in Mozambique and in the year 1995 Mozambique became a member of the British Commonwealth.
