Hurricane Matthew was a powerful and deadly hurricane that formed in the Atlantic Ocean in September 2016. It was the 13th named storm, fifth hurricane, and second major hurricane of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season. In addition to the loss of life and damage to infrastructure, Hurricane Matthew also caused significant disruption to travel and business operations in many areas, particularly along the southeastern United States coast.


Hurricane Matthew Path

Hurricane Matthew began as a tropical wave that formed off the African coast on September 22, 2016. The storm rapidly intensified on September 30 as it moved towards the Caribbean. The storm first made landfall on the southwestern tip of Haiti on October 4, 2016.

After passing over Cuba, Matthew moved northward towards the United States. The storm brushed the eastern coast of Florida on October 7, 2016. The storm then weakened as it moved up the coast and made landfall again in South Carolina on October 8, 2016.

The hurricane continued northward along the coast, causing significant flooding and wind damage in North Carolina before moving out to sea on October 10, 2016.

Hurricane Matthew Category

Hurricane Matthew was a powerful and destructive storm that reached Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, with maximum sustained winds of 160 miles per hour and a minimum central pressure of 934 millibars. The storm then weakened slightly before making landfall on the southwestern tip of Haiti as a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds of around 145 miles per hour.

After passing over Cuba, the hurricane moved northward towards the United States, where it brushed the eastern coast of Florida as a Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds of around 120 miles per hour. The storm then weakened as it moved up the coast in South Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane, with sustained winds of around 75 miles per hour.

Damage By Matthew

Hurricane Matthew was a destructive and deadly storm that caused significant damage and loss of life along its path. The storm was responsible for at least 603 deaths, with the majority occurring in Haiti, where the storm caused widespread flooding, landslides, and destruction of infrastructure.

In the United States, Hurricane Matthew caused significant storm surge flooding and wind damage in many areas along the southeastern coast, particularly in Florida, where the storm caused billions of dollars in damage. The storm also caused flooding and damage in Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, where it caused significant power outages, transportation disruptions, and property damage.
