Cyclone Pam: Cleanup efforts underway in Vanuatu

Tropical Cyclone Pam, which recently struck Vanuatu, caused massive destruction. Homes and shops have been destroyed and trees ripped apart. Many residents are seeking shelter in schools and churches. According to media reports, at least six people are feared killed, but the death toll is expected to rise. The deaths have so far been reported from Port Villa. Oxfam country director in Vanuatu said that cleanup efforts are currently underway. Australia has offered help and will be sending two planes with relief supplies.

Cycle Pam: Vanuatu on high alert

A massive storm bore down on the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. According to media reports, cyclone Pam with predicted wind gusts of more than 280km/h is expected to hit capital Port Vila on Friday night. The capital went into a lockdown. A red alert has been announced in the provinces of Torba, Sanma, Penama and Malampa. Unicef has warned that around 26,000 people are in the storm’s path. Cyclone Pam is the biggest storm ever to hit Vanuatu.
