Hong Kong Flag

Hong Kong is a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. The flag of Hong Kong comprises a red field in the center of which is a white, five-petal orchid flower. The red field signifies zest, celebration, and a festive mood.

The color red also stands for the national PRC flag. The color was adopted to establish a link between Hong Kong and China. The flower is a symbol of harmony and also represents the dichotomy between China and Hong Kong.

Each of the flower’s petals features a five-pointed red star which represents for communism and socialism. The flag was first adopted on April 4, 1990, at the Third Session of the Seventh National People’s Congress. The flag was formally approved as the national flag on July 1, 1997, when the sovereignty of Hong Kong changed hands from the United Kingdom to China.
