On the coast of Atlantic Ocean of Benin there is the city of Ouidah. Ouidah is the ideal goal for the travelers who want to get the historical flavor of Benin. In the past, the city of Ouidah used to be a port of Benin. History speaks about the city that it was once hub of the slave deal in the region.
The traditional religion of Benin Voodoo is very strong in Ouidah and is practiced by the people staying there. Trip to Ouidah would include visiting the various historical sites in the city.
The attractions at Ouidah include the following places:
- The Slave Route (Route des Esclave): This is the original trail by which the slaves had taken the route to get the sea coast to get on to the ships. The tourist to Ouidah can take guides to this place. To get to the coast three villages have to be crossed and there is a memorial that has been erected at the last village.
- The Voodoo Museum or Musee d’historie d’ Ouidah: This particular museum houses the ancient history of Dahomey and also hints of the slave operating history. The visitors can get to the museum everyday.
- The Sacred Forest: In a beautiful park the tourists would find a gigantic tree that is said to have been planted during the disappearance of the founder of Ouidah, prehistoric King Kpasse.
