Angola adopted its national flag on November 11, 1975, following its independence from Portugal. The Angolan flag is divided into two halves – red at the top and the bottom half black. In the middle of the flag is a yellow emblem that comprises a partial cog wheel, a machete, and a star.
The objects in the emblem represent industrial and agricultural workers. The cogwheel symbolizes the laborers, the machete stands for peasants and the nation’s armed struggle, while the star signifies international solidarity. The red color in the flag represents the blood shed by Angolans during the national liberation struggle and the country’s defense. The black stands for the Continent of Africa. The yellow represents the mineral wealth of Angola.
The flag of Angola was adopted at the time of the Marxist government and hence resembles the symbol of Communism.
