Admitted in the bar in the year 1845, William Wheeler practiced law in his home town, Malone. William Wheeler had served a number of offices before being elected as a Vice President of the Unites States of America, these included:

  • He worked as a district attorney for the Franklin County from the year1846 to 1849.
  • William Wheeler served as a member delegate of the New York State Assembly from the year 1850 to 1851
  • He served as a member of the state Senate in between the year 1858 and 1860.
  • William Wheeler was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh United States Congress from 1861 to 1863
  • He was a member delegated to the state constitutional conventions in the year1867 and 1868
  • He was elected to attend the Forty-first and also three following Congresses 1869 -1877

Delegated to the Republican Convention in 1876, William Wheeler was a part of the convention that nominated President Rutherford B. Hayes. It was the same Convention in which William Wheelers name came up for the post of Vice Presidency.

The Vice Presidency of William Wheeler spanned from 1877 to 1881but even in this period the Vice President found the sessions of the Senate highly tedious and rarely presided over it. President Hayes had refused to be nominated again in 1880 and William Wheeler was not offered a re nomination. After his retirement William Wheeler retreated from public life and finally died in his home town Malone.
