Cameroon’s Football History

Cameroon’s national football team represents the country in international competitions. Also called “The Indomitable Lions” (Les Lions Indomptables), it is administered by the “Fédération Camerounaise” de Football and began taking part in the World Football Cup in 1982. So far it has qualified seven times for the mega tournament – more than any other African team.

The team was placed at the 11th position in the World Rankings in 2006 and this is the best rank in Cameroon’s football history. The national football team also participated in the Confederations Cup twice in 2001 and 2003. It has been contesting in the Africa Cup of Nations since 1970 and has been able to appear in 16 tournaments. Currently it is placed at 56th position at World Football Elo Rankings and the highest position it has got in this segment is 12th in 2003.

The home ground of charismatic the Cameroon national football team is the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium located in Yaounde which is also used for various athletic games. Cameroon is represented by its under-23 squad in the Olympic Games. The team appeared only three times in the Summer Olympics in 1984, 2000, and 2008. The national under-23 football team became champions in the Summer Olympic Games of the year 2000 and was able to enter the quarter-finals in 2008.

 

Cameroon’s Success History

Cameroon’s national football team became the first African team to enter the quarter-finals of the World Football Cup when it entered the stage in the year 1990, but unfortunately lost to England in extra time. The team finished as runners-up in the 2003 FIFA Federations Cup. The national team has been quite successful in the Africa Cup of Nations grabbing the title four times in 1984, 1988 and consecutively in the years 2000 and 2002. It finished runners-up twice in 1986 and 2008. Besides this, it gained the third (1972) and fourth (1992) position and was able to enter the quarter-finals four times in the same tournament. The national football team of Algeria has qualified for the World Football Cup in Brazil.
