The Bihor Mountains, Trascau Mountains, and the Big Mountain lie in the northwestern part of the region. The Gaina and Metaliferi Mountains also lie in the northwestern part. The Sebes Mountains lie in the south.

The climate of Cugir in Romania exhibits variations in accordance with changes in altitude. The higher altitude areas are colder and get more rainfall. The temperature in the lower areas is higher. The average temperature is approximately 10 degrees Celsius. Cugir was a province of the Roman Empire from the 2nd century AD until the 3rd century AD.
