Cernavoda is a small city in Romania. The city came to fame when it was chosen as the site for building a power-generating nuclear reactor. Cernavoda contains the only nuclear facility in Romania.
The nuclear power plant in Cernavoda is used for purely civilian purposes. The nuclear power plant generates approximately 10% of Romania’s total power demand. Cernavoda has two electricity generation units. The two units are Cernavoda Unit 1 and Cernavoda Unit 2. The Cernavoda Unit 1 is fully operational and works at optimal capacity. The electricity generated is used in both commercial and domestic utilities. A large number of heavy industries are dependent on the electrical power generated by the Cernavoda nuclear facility. Cernavoda Unit 2 is under construction and supplies less electrical power than Cernavoda Unit 1.
The nuclear power plant in Cernavoda Romania is fully owned and operated by the nuclear state utility of Romania. The name of the administering authority is Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica. The nuclear power generating company is wholly owned by the government of Romania. The nuclear company is also administered by the Romanian government. The Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica is assisted in its technological efforts by two foreign companies. The two foreign companies are Ansaldo Italy and AECL Canada.
