Islamic States of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a group of Sunni Jihadi of the Middle East, which claim control over the Muslims of the world. The group was earlier known as Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). It has seized a larger portion across eastern part of Syria and parts of north and west Iraq. This group is considered a terrorist group and organization by the UN and many of the world countries such as US, UK, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and Indonesia. The ideology of ISIS is influenced by the extremist group of al-Qaeda, it promotes anti-western feeling and believes that modern Islam is doing harm to the religion so the Muslims should follow old Islamic values, it encourages religious violence. In June 2014, the group published a document linking its leader to great Prophet. The headquarters of this group is in Ar Raqqah in Syria.

The Muslim world or Muslim countries usually denotes countries having majority of population who practice Islamic religion. The map below shows the 49 countries in which Muslims comprise more than 50% of the population. Nigeria is projected to become the 50th Muslim-majority country by 2030. Today many Muslim countries have incorporated Islamic Sharia law, wholly or in part, into their legal systems.

One of the most feared terrorist organizations, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria occupies major portions of both the countries. It has been estimated that ISIS currently controls 32,133 km of area. More than eight million people are living in ISIS controlled areas. The Syrian city of Ar-Raqqah serves as the administrative center of the terrorist organization. The Iraqi city of Mosul is the largest city under the control of ISIS. In October 2014, the Libyan city of Derna became the first city outside Iraq and Syria to become a part of the Islamic State caliphate. The United States-led coalition forces have launched air strikes on prominent ISIS strongholds such as Dayr az Zawr, and Kobani in Syria and Fallujah in Iraq.
