Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA), Nicaragua was established in 1979. Previously the Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA), Nicaragua was known as Nicaraguan Institute of Natural Resources and the Environment (IRENA). The Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) or the Ministry of the environment and Natural Resources was founded by the Sandinistas of the Nicaraguan government. The main objectives of the Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) is to protect environment through extensive and intensive survey and researches.
The Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) conducts different surveys and projects to protect environment and keep them out of control from the hands of foreign institutions. The Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) was continuously receiving advice from the countries like Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France, Mexico, Cuba, United Nations, and France.

Through the surveys and researches the Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) found that most of the water bodies in Nicaragua was polluted because deposition of industrial wastage. To increase reforestation in Nicaragua, the Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) supervise several tree plantation projects and researches.
