Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA), Nicaragua was established in 1979. Previously the Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA), Nicaragua was known as Nicaraguan Institute of Natural Resources and the Environment (IRENA). The Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) or the Ministry of the environment and Natural Resources was founded by the Sandinistas of the Nicaraguan government. The main objectives of the Ministerio del Ambiente y los Recursos Naturales (MARENA) is to protect environment through extensive and intensive survey and researches.
