Gaius Julius Hyginus was born in Spain and was a student of Cornelius Alexander Polyhistor. He was an acclaimed Latin writer and cartographer. He was the author of many biographies and topographical treatises. He had written works of criticism on a wide variety of subjects. Hyginus also wrote about mythologies and some of the works that still remains are the “Poetical Astronomy” and “Fabulae”.
Fabulae, a collection of mythological stories were known to be the storehouse of information. Major portions of this book have been lost, only one manuscript is existing till date. One of the fragmentary manuscripts has been preserved in the Vatican library.
Poetical Astronomy – one of his outstanding works focused on the stars and celestial bodies and their links with various myths. He had a distinct style of writing which was quite noteworthy. Both of his works were written in an abridged pattern.
