The Fortune 500 represents the wealthiest, most successful corporations in the US and the combined revenues of these 500 companies add up to about 12 trillion dollars – almost 65 percent of the national GDP. These 500 companies together employ 27.9 million people and account for 840 billion dollars of profits (as of 2016). Their combined market value is about 17 trillion dollars. These figures make it important to understand the value of the Fortune 500 companies and their dominance of their respective industries.
