North Ayrshire Council
Of the 32 council areas, we have North Ayrshire Council, which is located in the southwest area of Scotland. It has Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, South Ayrshire, and East Ayrshire as its borders on the northeast, north, south, and east, respectively. This council is spread over a total area of 342 square miles and has a population of 138,000 population as per estimates.
The North Ayrshire Council area was established in the year 1996, succeeding the district of Cunninghame. The council area comprises such towns as Dalry, Ardrossan, Kilwinning, Largs, Irvine, Kilbirnie, Beith, Saltcoats, Stevenston, Isle of Arran, Cumbrae Isles, etc., of which Irvine is the largest town. It is also home to the council’s headquarters.
The year 2007 saw the formation of a minority administration in the local council by the Labour Party. In the Westminster parliament, the area is covered by the parliamentary constituency and in the Scottish Parliament, the area is under the two-divided constituency Cunninghame South and Cunninghame North.
There are 30 councilors who are representatives of the 8 multi-member wards in North Ayrshire. Each ward comprises 3 to 4 councilors. The North Ayrshire council contains 11 Scottish Labour Party Councilors, 6 Independent Councilors, 12 Scottish National Party (SNP) Councilors, and 1 Conservative and Unionist Councilor. Mostly, all meetings of the council take place in the council chambers that are situated at Cunninghame House in Irvine.
