Lamu



Lamu is a fabulous place situated just beside the Indian Ocean. The lush green vegetation of Lamu relaxes the eyes at once. Lamu is a remote town in Kenya, 50miles south of the Somalia border.

Lamu is Kenya’s oldest living town. Most of the population is Muslim. The hospitality of the local people is beyond imagination.

Interestingly enough automobiles are not allowed in the town mainly because of the streets are extremely narrow and crowded with people. The District Commissioner has a car, which is the only car in the town. But transportation is not a problem in Lamu as it is a very small town. People can walk from one place to another.

In Lamu, most of the women wear black wrap-around roles and cover their heads as well in black. A few of them cover their entire face except for slits around their eyes. The men usually wear full-length white robes and distinct skull-type caps.

Lamu is still isolated enough. It is not overcrowded with tourists because it is a place difficult to get to. The interaction of the local people is found to be genuine. The shopkeepers explain everything to the customer and help them understand the indigenous culture.
