To the Botswana government, Botswana education takes the high priority. In the sector of Botswana education, the Ministry of Education spends at around

30 percent of the public spending. The education in Botswana revolves around the policy, that an informed and educated society would turn to a productive, prosperous and innovative society.




The Botswana Education System has the 7-3-2 structure viz. Primary School, JSS and SSS. In the education of Botswana, the government provides the free and universal education to the students for 10 years. There are certain objectives of the national education of Botswana. The objectives are:

    In the year 1999, the civic spending on Botswana education was about 9.1 % of the GDP. In the year 1996, in the primary level there were 318,629 students at Botswana and the number of teachers was 12,785. The University of Botswana was established in the year 1982 on 1st July.

    Maru a Pula School Botswana

    Maru a Pula School is a co educational school located at Gaborone in Botswana. The Maru a Pula School was established in the year 1972. Among the international Botswana schools, Maru a Pula is a noted school. When the school was first opened, there were 25 students to start with.


    The school is built on a 50 acre campus at the center of the capital city of Gaborone. The school has 550 students out of which 114 students stay in boarding.     The Ministry of Botswana Education has been doing a commendable job since the independence of the country.The Ministry of Botswana Education is responsible for the overall growth in the number of students of all stages in Botswana. The Education Law of Botswana came into existence in the year 1966 at the time of independence of the country.


    The Ministry of Education Botswana has some special core objectives to carry out. The objectives set for the education development are as follows:

This new system includes seven years of primary education, three years of junior secondary education and two years of senior secondary education.

    University of Botswana

    The higher education in the country of Botswana is on the rise. The University of Botswana is the hub of higher education for the students of Botswana after the senior secondary education. The students, who receive either first or second class in the final examinations of the senior secondary courses become eligible to get admission at the University of Botswana.

    The university in Botswana is not under the control of the government. There is no intervention of the state in the University of Botswana. The issues like employment of staffs, salaries, promotion of staffs all are controlled by the autonomous body of the university. There is also the Botswana College of Agriculture. This college was established on May 31st in the year 1991. The associate institution of the University of Botswana is the Botswana College of Agriculture.

    The University of Botswana was established in 1982. The University of Botswana has the vision that it would become a foremost scholastic center of brilliance not only in Africa but also in the world. The mission of the university is to provide the intellectual strength to the academic and human resource capability of the country and also of the global population.     Westwood International School Gaborone

    In the year 1988, the establishment of Westwood International School, Gaborone took place with the objective of conveying an international level of education to the young people of Botswana. The Westwood International School, Gaborone is accessible to both girls and boys and is also open to students irrespective of caste and creed. The Westwood International School, Gaborone has adopted the language of English as the medium of teaching. In Gaborone Botswana, the Westwood International School is located.
