Richmond, the capital of Virginia, located at the fall line of the James River in the Piedmont region of the state. The Richmond Metropolitan Area is the third most populous metro in Virginia. Known as “Capital of the South,” the city is located 66 miles east of Charlottesville and 98 miles south of Washington D.C., the national capital.

 

How to Reach Richmond

Richmond International Airport (RIC) serves the Greater Richmond area.

 

Amtrak operates Northeast Regional route through Richmond Main Street Station. Staples Mill Road Station is a stop on Carolinian, Silver Meteor, Silver Star, and Palmetto routes.

 

The city lies at the juncture of Interstate 95 and Interstate 64. It is encircled by I-295 and Virginia State Route 288.

 

Best Time to Visit Richmond

Late summer and Autumn, September through November, when the mercury in the South has cooled down is the ideal time to get the best of outdoor events and festivals in Richmond.

 

Things to Do in Richmond

The Victorian estate Maymont, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, Edgar Allan Poe Museum, American Civil War Museum, and Virginia State Capitol are major attractions in Richmond.

 

There is plenty to explore in the city: listen to the echoes of Patrick Henry’s historic speech “Liberty or Death” at St. John’s Church, stop and smell the flowers in Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, go for a walk by the river in Byrd Park.
