Virginia Land and People

To study Virginia land and people one needs to thoroughly understand the fact that the Commonwealth of Virginia is historically one of the significant states of the United States. Historical evidence states that Virginia land and people originally belonged to the Red Indian clan, and even to this day the population of Virginia is predominantly Red Indian. This southern region of the United States gained its name from the British colonizers who named the land after the "Virgin Queen" of England, Elizabeth I. The state of Virginia played a very significant role in shaping American history and was probably the first of the states to have rebelled against British colonization. The land and people of Virginia were probably the only parts of America to have featured on the British colonizers' list, ever since they had set foot on the New World called America, and had remained a colony until the American revolution.

Since the age of the early inhabitants of the place, the Red Indians, Virginia land was ideally suited to crop cultivation and justifiably, agriculture had emerged as the major revenue-earning sector of the state. Almost all the 70 counties within the state of Virginia are extremely supportive of agriculture and related activities like dairy farming. About 8.7 million acres of Virginia land are engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry, while approximately 15.2 million acres of land are covered by forests. The abundance of greenery in Virginia has made the economy dependent on industries like fishing, wood-based industries and hunting. According to government surveys, wherein Virginia is referred to as Va, the state approximately covers an area of 42,769 square miles. It is served by one of the biggest ports in the world, Norfolk and to the west of this port lies the capital of Virginia, Richmond. Lying on the Atlantic coast, Virginia is bordered by West Virginia and Maryland to its north, Tennessee and North Carolina lie to its south while Maryland and the Atlantic covers its eastern borders. The state of West Virginia also stretches to the west of Virginia where it is joined by Kentucky.
