Although Virginia College does not have a very long history to prove its worth in academic circles yet, it is quite well-known because of the standard of education that it imparts to its students. It was only in 1983 that the college saw the light of day because of the pioneering movement of the Atlantis Group, Inc. and then the institution has truly developed under the hands of Career Futures, Inc. when they bought it in 1989.
The main campus of the college, which had initially started as a branch campus, is situated in Birmingham in Alabama County. While the Birmingham campus started operations in 1992, the college established a second branch campus in Huntsville in 1993, thus expanding at quite a fast pace. The fields of study which has made Virginia College especially prestigious are; business administration, technology, management and other business related courses.
Virginia College had shown rapid improvement within a span of very few years as a result of which it was awarded recognition as a senior college by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools in 1997. It is now the responsibility of this organization to sanction all programs that is being included within the college's curricula.
Virginia College once again changed hands in 1999 when the Education Corporation of America acquired it. Ever since, the college has not stopped expanding and very recently it has opened its Virginia College Gulf Coast at Biloxi in Mississippi in 2005 and the Virginia College School of Health and Business, Tennessee in 2006. The college also has a separate department dedicated to distance education and is called the Virginia College Online.
