History of Romania is full of events that have helped us to understand the undercurrents that led to the emergence of modern Romania. During the pre-historic times, the territory of Romania was visited by different groups of people. The fossil of an adult male jaw bone has been found here. According to the Romanian history the age of this fossil has been estimated around 34,000 to 36,000 years. This is in fact considered as the oldest fossil found in Europe.
According to the history of Romania the first human settlements in the Roman territory were of the Dacians in 513 BC. Under the leadership of Burebista, the Dacians emerged as a powerful tribal people and they even interfered in the interests of the local people. Julius Caesar started a campaign against the Dacians but was defeated and killed. Some years later Burebista also met with the same fate. With the gradual expansion of Romanian empire, the Dacians empire ultimately was overthrown by the Roman emperor Trajan. However, in 271 AD the Roman Administration filed to sustain frequent invasions and attacks by the Goths and the Carpi.
During the dark ages, Romania was invaded by people belonging to different groups like the Avar Empire, First Bulgarian Empire, Hunnish Empire and the Gothic Empire. During the 14th century, Moldavia and Wallachia emerged to fight against the strength of Ottomans. The Ottomans captured Constantinople in 1453. Most of Hungary and the entire Balkan Peninsula came under the control of the Ottomans by 1541 AD. Wallachia, Moldavia and Transylvania accepted the supremacy of the Ottomans but retained their internal independence. In the Battle of Vaslui, the Ottomans received a great blow from Stephen III, an able and efficient Moldavian ruler.
