Mauritania Population comprises people from different racial groups and religions. About two-fifths of Mauritania Population is made up people belonging to black African and mixed Moor heritages. Another 30 percent of the population in Mauritania consists exceptionally of the Moors, who are direct descendents of the Berbers and the mixed Arabians, many of whom were nomadic in nature.
More than 90 percent of the Mauritanian population lives in the southern area of the country. About 30 percent of the Mauritanian people are composed of the black African farmers, settled permanently on the Senegal River valley.
The Moors constitute more than two-thirds of the Mauritania population, among which more than about half of the Moors are white, popularly called the "bidan", while the remaining are of Arabian and Berber origins. A considerable part of the people in Mauritania consists of the black Moors, belonging to Sudan.
The gradual rise in the total population of Mauritania is well noticed, as one goes through the related facts and figures of the past few years. According to the census of 1988, Mauritania had a population strength of 1,864,236 inhabitants. This figure rose in leaps and bounds, reaching some 2,747,312 inhabitants in 2001. Moreover, the 2001 census also reveals the fact that the general population density of the country was startling, with only three to seven persons living on every square kilometer of land.
Finally, minorities like the ethnic and racial people also form integral part of the national population, as original inhabitants of the land.
