The government of Lithuania consists of three branches namely executive, judicial and legislative. The prime minister and the president of the country fall under the executive branch of the government. The Lithuania Prime Minister the head of the government. The Lithuania Prime Minister is appointed by the president of the country. After being elected as the prime minister, he has to serve the nation for time span of five years. The president in consultation with the members of parliament elects the prime minister. Since the prime minister of the nation is also the head of the government he is given the power of electing the council of ministers in consultation with the president. Gediminas Kirkilas, the current prime minister of the nation had won the election by a large number of votes.
The first office for the prime minister of Lithuania was founded in 1990. It was established during the Soviet Union's collapse by multiparty association. Formerly, the post was known as the "Chairperson of the Council of Ministers". The title came into use between 1918 and 1940. The prime minister decision plays a key role in the various policies of the government.
