Lithuania Constitution

With the independence of Lithuania, the parliament of the country adopted certain provisional constitution which came to be known as the "provisional basic law". It was created to give a framework to the newly formed government of Lithuania. Thus the Lithuania constitution empowered people with their democratic rights.

With the introduction of the Lithuania constitution, the legislative and the executive branch came under the parliament of the government. But the judicial branch was kept independent as before. In the constitution of Lithuania, emphasis was given on the fundamental and democratic rights of the Lithuania people. It guarantees religious teachings in the public schools of Lithuania. Aside political and religious rights it also guarantees social rights to the people of the nation.

The Soviet model of constitution proved unsuitable for the new democratic system of Lithuania government. It took almost two years for the contesting parties to come to a compromise that the legislature of a strong presidential system would share equal power as the president of the nation. This new constitution was approved by several voters in 1992, 25th October.

The constitution of Lithuania also guarantees free medical care, compensation for unemployment, pension and financial support for poverty-stricken families. The Lithuania constitution is a strongly built foundation that promises several rights to the Lithuania people.
