The establishment and the chronological development of the country can be traced back in the early History of Jordan. Jordan is officially known as Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Arabian country is surrounded on the western side by the Dead Sea and Israel, on the north by Syria, on the east by Iraq and on the south by Saudi Arabia.

Early History of Jordan
The History of Jordan can be traced back to the 2000 B.C. when the Semitic Amorites started living around the Jordan River. The Seleucids conquered the country during the 4th century B.C. it was ruled by the Nabatean Empire. Romans ruled the country during a long period of 1st century B.C. to the middle of 1st century A.D. The Muslim Arabs ruled the country in the early 7th century and became a part of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem. Until the 20th century Jordan was ruled by the Ottoman Turks. The Ottoman Empire came to an end after World War I and the region was controlled by the government of Faisal I. In 1920 Jordan became a part of the British League of Nations authorized under Palestine.
Post Independence History of Jordan
After signing a treaty with Great Britain in 1946 Jordan became independent and was known as Hashemite Kingdom of Transjordan. In 1948 as a member of the Arab League Transjordan fought with Israel. The name of the country was changed to Jordan in 1949.
