Abashiri is located on the northeastern coast of the Japanese island of Hokkaido. It is part of the Abashiri Subprefecture in Hokkaido Prefecture. Known for its severe winter weather and icebreaking ships. Home to the Abashiri Prison Museum showcasing penal history.
