The Wisconsin state came into existence after signing the Treaty of Paris in 1783, which resulted in transferring the land area from the British to American control. On May 29, 1848, the US state of Wisconsin was created from Wisconsin Territory. It initially had 28 counties. While the state’s capital city (Madison) is located in Dane County, the largest city (Milwaukee) is located in Milwaukee County.
