The coastline of Washington state is a part of the West Coast or Pacific Coast of the United States. The Pacific coast of Washington is about 157 miles long, making it the 12th largest in the country. The Puget Sound − a system of interconnected marine waterways − lies in northwestern Washington. It is the second largest estuary in the US. It extends roughly 100 miles north-south from Deception Pass to Olymipa.
Major cities and metropolitan areas on the Washington Coast include Seattle metropolitan area and the city of Vancouver in Oregon’s Portland metropolitan area. The Seattle metropolitan area within the greater Puget Sound region comprises three most populous counties of Washington state: King, Snohomish, and Pierce. The city of Seattle and its immediate suburbs are in Kings County, while Tacoma metropolitan division lies in Pierce County. The city of Vancouver lies in the Portland metropolitan area or Greater Portland, the third largest urban center in Washington.
The Washington’s coast acts like a magnet for vacationers and beachcombers. The ruggedly beautiful Olympic National Park, quaint Native American fishing communities, and coastal old-growth forests entice scores of Washingtonians and out-of-towners to this part of the state. For those looking to get sand in their shoes, Shi Shi Beach, Ruby Beach, Rialto Beach, Owen Beach, and Half Moon Bay are the must-see destinations in Washington.
U.S. Route 101 and Interstate 5 are the major highways in the Pacific Northwest. The region is primarily served by Seattle−Tacoma International Airport.
