Utah counties are divided into six classes based on the population by Utah Code.

  • First Class(Population of 700,000 or more):  It has one county, a salt lake.
  • Second Class (Population between 125,000 and 700,000): It has five counties
  • Third Class (Population between 31,000 – 125,000): It has six counties
  • Fourth Class (Population between 11,000 -31,000): It has eight counties
  • Fifth Class (population between 4,000 – 11,000): It has five counties
  • Sixth Class (Population below 4000): It has four counties.

In 1849 under the provisional State of Deseret, seven counties were originally established. In 1851 the territory of Utah was created. Three additional counties were established between 1851-1853. The counties were Millard, Juab and Washington. Between 1854 and 1894, all other counties were established by the Utah Territorial Legislature under territorial law. The popular vote gubernatorial proclamation created only the last two counties. The counties were Duchesne and Daggett.

The oldest and five original counties of Utah were created on March 03, 1852. Salt Lake County, Tooele County, Sanpete County, Utah County and Weber Counties.

Largest and Smallest County by Area in Utah

San Juan County is the largest county in Utah, covering an area of 7,820 square miles (20,300 km2). The smallest county in Utah is Davis County, covering 299 square miles (770 km2).

Some of the best counties to live in the Utah State of United States are Cache County, Davis County, Utah County, Salt Lake County, Summit County and Wasatch County.

Most Populated and Least Populated county of Utah

Salt Lake County is the most populated county (2020 census) in Utah, and Daggett County is the least populated county (2020 census) in Utah state of United States.
