Long Island Map
Long Island, a region within New York state, is located along the northeast coast of the United States. The island stretches east-northeast from the New York Harbor into the Atlantic Ocean. It is the most populated island in the US as well as the largest island in the contiguous US. If the island were a state, it would rank first in population density. There are four counties in Long Island:
- Nassau County
- Suffolk County
- Queens County
- Brooklyn County
Long Island begins only where the New York City ends. Suburban houses like little boxes on a game board, glitzy summer resorts of well-heeled upper class, the aroma of fresh farm produce and famed wineries enthrall travelers to the coastal charm of Long Island.
The beaches in Long Island tempt swimmers, sailors, and sunbathers. While its South Shore boasts the Five Towns, powdery white sands, the bustling Freeport Nautical Mile, and the venerable Montauk Point Lighthouse, the North Shore features dramatic bluffs, affluent Gold Coast mansions and gardens, and easy charm of Greenport Village.
The island was inhabited by 13 Native American tribes before the Europeans settled here in the seventeenth century. Agriculture and whaling in the 18th and 19th centuries ushered in wealth and prominence. In the decades following the Civil War, aspiring Americans exploited the pleasures of saltwater bathing and sea breeze as farming and fishing communities of the Hamptons gradually transformed into summer resorts.
