In 1850 New Mexico Territory was organised. In 1852 the first nine counties in the territory created were Dona Ana, Bernalillo, Rio Arriba, Santa Ana, San Miguel, Santa Fe, Socorro, Valencia and Taos Counties. In 1860 Mora County was created. In 1868 Grant County was created, followed by Lincoln and Colfax in 1869. Bernalillo County absorbed Santa Ana County in 1876. Between 1884 and 1909, 14 more counties were created, bringing the total number to 26. On January 6, 1912, New Mexico was admitted to the Union as the 47th state. In 1917 Lea and De Baca counties were followed by Hidalgo County in 1920, Harding and Catron Counties in 1921 and 1949, Los Alamos County was created. Finally, in 1981, Cibola County was formed, bringing the total number of counties to 33.
