History of Counties in New Jersey
Between 1674 and 1702, the state of New Jersey was governed by two groups as two distinct provinces, West Jersey and East Jersey. The first counties of New Jersey were created as administrative districts within each region. In 1675, East Jersey was divided into Essex, Bergen, Monmouth and Middlesex counties. Whereas the initial counties of west Jersey created in 1681 were Salem and Burlington.
On April 17, 1702, East Jersey and west jersey were united into the single royal Province of New Jersey. After this, the counties of Henderson (1714), Morris (1739), Cumberland (1748), and Sussex (1753) were formed.
On December 18, 1787, the state of New Jersey entered the Union as 3rd state with 13 counties. Between 1824 – 1857, New Jersey added eight more counties, bringing 21. Most of the counties of New Jersey have derived their names from the prominent leaders in the colonial and revolutionary period and after the place names in England.
