Prominent Michigan Counties

The state of Michigan is segregated into 83 counties, which are further segregated into townships and cities for better governance. Lansing is the capital of the state of Michigan. Each county is efficiently administered from their respective county seats. Though Lansing is the state capital, yet Detroit is the largest and also one of the most prominent cities of the state. Prominent counties of the state are Wayne County, Oakland County, Keweenaw County, Ingham County, Eaton County, Allegan County, and Ottawa County.

Wayne County

One of the most prominent and also the largest county of the state is the Wayne County. With the population of 1,820,584, Wayne County is home to Detroit, its county seat and also the largest city of Michigan. Detroit itself boasts of innumerable tourist attractions. No visit is long enough to enjoy the splendor of this amazing city. The State of Michigan Park, also known as the Belle Isle Park, offers something interesting for all nature lovers, fitness freaks, history and architecture experts, and athletes.

Fort Wayne, the historic site which was once used by the US Army is another attraction to look forward to. Founded in the year 1965, the Wright Museum is also a must-see attraction in the city. It is the world’s biggest institution solely dedicated to African-American history and culture. One can be entertained by various events like concerts, lectures, film screenings, performances and many other things all committed to the African-American culture, which are organized at the museum. Another interesting museum is the Detroit Institute of Arts, which exhibits one of the most significant art collections in the US. Apart from all the above various other places like the Detroit riverfront, Detroit Opera House, Fox Theatre, Joe Lois Arena, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Renaissance Center, Science Center, and the most prominent Ford Field, are the major attractions of the city.

Though the state of Michigan is a diversified economy, it is popularly known for being the center of the automotive industry of US, since it is home to the nation’s three primary automobile companies, namely, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, all of whose headquarters are located in the Detroit area.

Ingham County

Lansing, which is the capital of Michigan, is part of the notable Ingham County. The county which has around 280,895 people, with the county seat as Mason, owns around 90% of the capital of the state. The major tourist attractions in the county are Potter Park Zoo, Munn Ice Arena, Spartan Stadium, Lansing Center, Dodge Mansion, Red Cedar River, Lake Lansing, and St. Mary Cathedral.

Oakland County

The second most populated county of Michigan is the Oakland County, with a population of around 1.2 million and it gets its name from its oak orchards. The county seat of Oakland is Pontiac. One can explore various options like camping, cross-country skiing, and hiking in the county. There exist many recreational areas in the county for such activities. Few of which are Highland Recreational Area, West Bloomfield Trail and Huron Meadows Metropark. Other prominent tourist attractions in the county are the Detroit Zoo, Meadow Brook Hall, Holocaust Memorial Center, Chrysler Museum, Congregation Shaarey Zedek, and Maybury State Park.

Keweenaw County

Keweenaw is the largest county in the state by area, with an area of 5,966 square miles and has a population of just 2,156. The county seat of Keweenaw is Eagle River. Mount Bohemia, Brockway Mountain Drive, Edisen Fishery, and Windigo Ranger Station are the major tourist attractions in the county. The county also has quite a few lighthouses to look out for, like Passage Island Light, Sand Hills Light, Rock Harbor Light, and Isle Royale Light.

Alger County

Alger County has an area of around 5,049 square miles and a population of 9,601, with the county seat being Munising. The Pickle Barrel House, Paulson House, Hiawatha National Forest, Memorial Falls, Munising Falls and Miners Falls, are few of the famous attractions in the county.

Eaton County

The Eaton County with an area of 579 square miles and a population of 107,759 people, has Charlotte as the county seat. It has the Blake’s Opera House, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Lansing Art Gallery, and Lansing river Trail as some of the famous tourist spots.
