Maine is situated in the northeastern part of the USA. The capital is Augusta. The city of Portland, farther south, is the largest in the state. Maine became the 23rd state of the USA on March 15, 1820, a part of Massachusetts earlier. Maine State Symbols

The Great Seal of the State of Maine is the official emblem of Maine. The legislature adopted the language that governs the seal’s design on June 9, 1820. The description and explanation of the seal’s design are credited to Waldoboro’s Colonel Isaac G. Reed. 

The official seal’s design features:

• A shield at the center of the circular seal. The design of this shield includes:

Maine History

The earliest dwellers in Maine were the aboriginals, who used to live here in 3000 BC. These aboriginals mainly belonged to Mi’kmaq (Micmac) and Abenaki tribes, who used to speak the Algonquian language. 

The earliest Europeans who visited the current Maine areas are believed to be the Vikings. Leif Ericson and 30 Viking sailors were thought to visit this land around 500 years before Columbus “discovered” America. They also tried to establish a settlement here. 

It was in 1498 that an Italian sailor employed by England’s King Henry VII reached and explored the Maine coast. However, the first-ever settlement was settled in 1607 at Popham by the Plymouth Company. In 1607 another settlement was established in Virginia’s Jamestown. However, this settlement didn’t last long due to the extreme cold temperature. That’s why Jamestown is still considered the first permanent settlement in America. 

Throughout the early 18th century, many wars took place between the French and the English troops on the question of ownership over Maine. The French fort capture at Nova Scotia’s Louisburg during the French and Indian Wars in 1745 was a significant military development. 

All French claims to this territory ended in 1763 when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Maine’s population of settlers started to grow when the threats from the Native Indians lessened in the mid-1700s. From 1743 to 1763, the people of this place jumped from 12,000 to 24,000. By the century-end, the people of settlers in this area jumped to over 150,000. 

The first major naval battle during the American Revolution occurred in June 1775. Around one thousand soldiers died during the American Revolution in Maine. Under the Missouri Compromise, Maine was established as the twenty-third state of the Union on March 15, 1820. 

During the American Civil War, around 73,000 men joined the Union forces, out of which 10% died during the conflict. Joshua L. Chamberlain and Oliver Otis Howard were the two war heroes who led the Union troops to victory in Maine.

Maine Geography

Maine spreads across a total area of 35,385 sq mi (91,646 sq km), out of which 30,862 sq mi (80,005 sq km) is land area and 4,523 sq mi (11,724 sq km) is water area. Maine is divided into these distinct areas:

• Coastal Lowlands: It starts from the Atlantic Ocean adjacent to Maine. It extends inland by around 10-40 miles (16-to-64.4 km). The characteristic features of this landform are:
  • In the north, between higher cliffs, small sandy beaches in small inlets are there.
  • In the south, flat and sandy beaches are there.

More than four hundred islands can be found off Maine’s coastal area. The largest of these islands is the Mount Desert (which forms Cadillac Mountain’s base). Mount Desert’s elevation is 1,530 feet (466.3 m) above sea level. 

Tidal creeks and salt marshes characterize the Coastal Lowlands to the west of the beaches and the coast. 

• Eastern New England Uplands: You’ll find this terrain from southern Canada to Connecticut. This section of landform is spread across a width of 20-to-50 miles (32-to-80 km). In the western part, Eastern New England Uplands rise to around 2,000 ft (609.6 m). The Aroostook Plateau is situated in the northern parts of this landform. This plateau has deep fertile soil, and that’s why it is used as farmland to grow Maine Potato crops. Fast streams and lakes are there in the Aroostook Plateau’s south. Through the New England Uplands’ center, the Longfellow Mountains run through. 
• White Mountains: These mountainous terrains in the state are mainly situated in the northwestern part. While its width is 5 miles (8 km) in the northern part, its width in the southern part is around 30 miles (48.3 km). Maine’s highest elevation point is Mount Katahdin (whose elevation is 5,276 feet or 1,608 m above sea level). This mountain is situated in the White Mountain landform in Maine. This region has around nine mountains whose elevation is more than 4,000 ft (1,219.2 m) and ninety-seven mountains whose elevation is more than 3,000 ft (914.4 m).
