The counties of Indiana were first formed during part of the Mississippi Territory and, after that, the Indiana Territory. When Indiana territory was first organized in 1800, five Indiana territories were originally first formed. On December 11, 1816, the State of Indiana entered the Union as the 19th State. The FIPS Code of Indiana State is 18, which, when combined with any county code, would be written as 18XXX.

Oldest and Newest Counties of Indiana

The oldest counties of Indiana were in the south, mainly near the Ohio River. The oldest County of Indiana is Knox County, created in 1790. The newer counties of Indiana were primarily in the northern territory acquired later. Between 1834 and 1840, many final counties were formed after the acquisition and break up of the Big Miami Reserve. The newest and the last county of Indiana created in 1859 is Newton County.
