Idaho Falls was initially known as Taylor’s Crossing, named after Matt Taylor, who built a toll bridge across the narrow gorge on the Snake River in the year 1865. In 1872, the town was renamed as Eagle Rock after a rock island became a nesting site for numerous eagles. Then in the year 1891, the town renamed itself as Idaho Falls after the rapids which existed below the bridge of Black Canyon.
