History of Idaho Counties
On March 3, 1863, Idaho Territory was organized from Washington Territory. In December of that year, the first county in the Idaho territory to be created was Owyhee County. In January 1864, Oneida County was organized. In February 1864, Nez Perce, Shoshone, Idaho, and Boise were recognized, while Alturas County was organized later the same month. Ada and Kootenai Counties were created in December 1864. In 1868 Idaho’s present-day boundaries were established, and Lemhi County was formed the following year. On July 3, 1890, the state of Idaho entered the Union as the 43rd state with 18 counties.
