Idaho Counties functions as the local level of government within its borders. Since 1945, each county of Idaho has used a license plate that has the first letter of the county’s name. Suppose two or more counties in the state have the same starting Alphabet. In that case, the letter in these counties is preceded by a number indicating that county’s order in the alphabetical list. For example, latah, Lemhi, Lewis and Lincoln County codes are 1L, 2L,3L, and 4L.

History of Idaho Counties

On March 3, 1863, Idaho Territory was organized from Washington Territory. In December of that year, the first county in the Idaho territory to be created was Owyhee County. In January 1864, Oneida County was organized. In February 1864, Nez Perce, Shoshone, Idaho, and Boise were recognized, while Alturas County was organized later the same month. Ada and Kootenai Counties were created in December 1864. In 1868 Idaho’s present-day boundaries were established, and Lemhi County was formed the following year. On July 3, 1890, the state of Idaho entered the Union as the 43rd state with 18 counties.


Oldest and Newest Counties of Idaho

The oldest and first original county of Idaho was created on December 31, 1863, was Owyhee County. Caribou County is the Newest and last County in Idaho state created on February 11, 1919.

Largest and Smallest County by Area in Idaho

The largest county in Idaho is Idaho county, covering an area of 8485 square miles (21,980 km2). The smallest county of  Idaho is Payette county covering an area of 408 square miles (1060 km2).

Best County to Live in Idaho

Some of the best counties to live in the Idaho State United States are Ada County, Latah County,  Bannock County, Bonneville County, Valley County and Blaine County.


Most Populated and Least Populated County of Idaho

Ada County is the most populated county (2020 census) in Idaho, and Clark County is the least populated county (2020 census) in Idaho state of the United States.
