About Hawaii

The US State of Hawaii is the 50th state in the United States. On August 21, 1959, it was admitted to the Union, and Hawaii achieved statehood. The State of Hawaii’s nicknames are:

Hawaii Flag 

The Hawaii Flag was officially adopted on December 29, 1845. The design of the Hawaiian flag included two sections:

• Eight horizontal stripes of three colors (white, red, and blue) are there. In 1943, these colors were standardized. Their sequence from top to bottom is:

• The words “The STATE OF HAWAII” (at the top) and the state motto “Ua Mau Ke Ea o ka ʻĀina I ka Pono” (at the bottom) are written in the outer ring. The meaning of the state motto is “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.”
• The coat of arms is at the center of the inner circle. It shows:
  • King Kamehameha, I’s image can be seen on the left-hand side of the coat of arms. Kamehameha the Great was the Kingdom of Hawaii’s first ruler. 
  • The goddess of liberty can be seen on the left-hand side of the coats of arms. 
  • Behind the figurines, the sun rises in the coat of arms. 
  • A quartered heraldic shield can be seen at the center of the coat of arms. 
    • Barry of eight Argent, Gules, and Azure is in the first and fourth quarter.
    • Sacred staff proper and an inescutcheon Vert charged with a mullet are in the second and third quarters.
  • A phoenix bird with its outstretched wings can come out of the fire, just below the heraldic seal. 
  • Eight taro leaves with banana foliage on either side can also be seen below the heraldic shield. Sprays of upwardly trailed maidenhair fern are also there.

The total area of Hawaii is 10,931 sq mi (28,311 sq km). Out of which 6,423 sq mi (16,638 sq km) is land area and 4,507 sq mi (11,672 sq km) is water area. It is the USA’s forty-third largest state in terms of size. 

At 13,796 feet (4,205 m), Mauna Kea is the highest elevation point. The state’s lowest point is the Pacific Ocean. The Wailuku River (in Hawaii) and Anahulu River (in Oahu) are two major rivers in the state. Salt Lake is a central lake. 

Hawaii is the only state in the United States with an archipelago consisting of a chain of 132 islands and islets. There are 8 main islands and 124 islets. This archipelago is spread across a stretch of 1,500 m (2,400 km). From west to east, the eight islands are:

• Niihau: It is a semi-arid island. However, many lakes can be found.

• Molokai: Three landforms can be found on this island. You’ll find rugged mountains and canyons in the state’s eastern region. A dry plateau is there in the western parts of the island. You’ll find a fertile plain for cultivating various crops in the central part of Molokai island.
• Lanai: The landform is suitable for growing pineapple. 
• Kahoolawe is a small and uninhabited island situated next to Maui island. This island is dry and windswept.
• Maui: It is also called the Valley Island as multiple canyons cut into two volcanic mountains. You’ll find a fertile land area between two mountains. The world’s most giant dormant volcanic crater is situated on Maui island. 
• Hawaii: It is the largest island out of all the islands and islets in this state. There are five volcanoes on this island, out of which two are still active (Kilauea and Mauna Loa). Hawaii Climate 

The climatic condition in Hawaii is mainly tropical. The hot season starts in June and continues till October. A relatively more relaxed season starts in December and continues till March. Constantly blowing northeast trade winds influence climatic conditions on the islands. May to October is the best time to visit Hawaii. 

The temperature in the coastal areas in the state of Hawaii varies from 11 °C (52 °F) to 35 °C (95 °F). Annual rainfall in coastal areas ranges from 415 mm (16.4 inches) to 1,000 mm (40 inches). 

The mountainous regions in the various islands of Hawaii get an annual average temperature of:

Hawaii History

The Polynesians arrived in Hawaii around 1500 years back. The first European to arrive in this archipelago was Captain James Cook. He landed in the Hawaiian islands in 1778 on Kauai island’s Waimea Bay. After the Earl of Sandwich, he named these islands “Sandwich Islands.” 

The first major battle took place between the people living on the island of Hawaii and Maui in 1790. It is known as the Battle of Kepaniwai. The next major battle took place five years later, in 1795. On Oahu island’s southern shores, this battle took place. This campaign of Kamehameha to unite the islands is known as the battle of Nuuanu. This battle started the reign of the Kamehameha dynasty over Hawaii from 1795 to 1874. It was King Kamehameha I who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1810. 

In Hawaii, the first missionaries arrived in 1820. From 1820 to 1845, the Hawaiian Kingdom’s capital was Lahaina. On Kauai island, the first sugar plantation opened up in 1835. The Hawaiian Kingdom changed its capital to Honolulu in 1845. The Kamehameha dynasty ended in 1874 after the death of William Charles Lunalilo. “Aloha ‘Oe” was penned by Queen Liliuokalani or Lydia Kamakaeha in 1878. 

The legislature and cabinet of the government were empowered, and the Hawaiian monarchy’s authority was curtailed in 1887. The 1887 Constitution of the Kingdom of Hawaii was signed, and it became known as the Bayonet Constitution. With the house arrest of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, the dismantling of the Kingdom of Hawaii started. Through the Newlands Resolution, the United States annexed Hawaii. The Organic Act established the Territory of Hawaii in 1900. On March 11, 1901, The Moana Hotel (the first Waikiki hotel) opened. It was also affectionately called “The First Lady of Waikiki.” 

Hawaii became the fiftieth state of the USA on August 21, 1959, after a popular vote. Hawaiian became the official language of this state in 1978 through the Hawaii State Constitutional Convention.
