Arkansas Counties’physiography varies from rolling hills to the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains to Delta Farmlands. The counties of Arkansas were first formed when Arkansas was part of the Missouri Territory and the Arkansas Territory. On March 2, 1819, when Arkansas Territory was organized, there were five original counties. The counties were Arkansas, Hempstead, Pulaski Clark and Lawrence counties. On June 15 in the year 1836, the state of Arkansas entered the Union as the 25th state. The counties of Arkansas are governed at the local level. Each county has several countywide officeholders, including a quorum court (legislative body) and a County Judge ( chief executive officer). Some of the counties of Arkansas no longer exist at present because they were discontinued, renamed or merged with other counties.
